Wii

The Wii (pronounced as English "we"), known in development as Revolution, was a home video game console from Nintendo. A seventh-generation console released in 2006, the Wii was Nintendo's fifth home console, the third to succeed the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the eleventh system overall to be manufactured by the company.

Although the Wii was technically the weakest console of its era, it was particularly notable as the first to use wireless motion controls as primary input. Its Wii Remote allowed players to translate their movement in real-world space to activity in-game, so long as it was properly secured to the player's body and within range of the console's sensor unit. For this reason alone, the Wii was a favorite of casual gamers, and sold over 90 million units within its eight years of issue.

The Wii was also the first Nintendo console to fully integrate network connectivity, which allowed the company to offer several Internet-based services. Chief among these was the Wii Shop Channel, a service that permitted players to purchase and download games and software directly to the console. The Wii Shop Channel was also the first to offer Nintendo's Virtual Console service, allowing players to download games that were released on earlier systems from Nintendo and past competitors such as Sega and Hudson (creators of the PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16). The Wii Shop Channel and its services were terminated on January 30, 2019.

The Wii was succeeded by the Wii U in 2012, with which downloaded content is compatible. Both the Wii and the Wii U were supplanted by the eighth-generation Switch hybrid device as of 2019.
