Statistics[]

Mantis Ant

Mantis Ant

  • Location: Underneath Potos Village
  • HP: 150
  • MP: 20
  • DEF: 0
  • EXP: 10
  • GP: 100
  • Weakness: None
  • Weapon Orb: Sword

Strategy[]

Randi will most likely be at level 2 when he visits Potos Village for the first time, but the player may not have earned enough GP from battle to afford Randi's first headgear available at the Potos shop. Prior to this first boss fight, it's recommended to return to the forest and kill enough Rabites to earn the 50 GP required to purchase a Bandanna. If Randi gains another level, all the better. Raising his Sword skill to level 1 will help as well, since it will speed the fight along.

As bosses go, Mantis Ant should be a cakewalk with the Bandanna equipped, and it is even more so in the 3D version. Though the battle is technically impossible to lose (Gemma will help out if Randi gets overwhelmed), it still pays to play smart. Watch out for a Level 0 Gem Missile or Acid Storm as these will knock off a sizable chunk of Randi's HP and may drop his Defense. If Mantis Ant gets an opportunity, it can cause quakes that will knock Randi out. In addition, the Mantis Ant has a tendency to use its forelimbs as a shield. Wait for these to open and attack quickly. With good timing and a fully charged stamina gauge, Randi may even be able to let loose a charged swing. Connecting with a few charged attacks will cut Mantis Ant down all the quicker.

In the 3D remake, striking from behind is also possible, but must be done quickly, before the beast reacts to it.

Metal Mantis[]

Statistics[]

Metal Mantis

Metal Mantis

  • Location: Imperial Castle
  • HP: 1220
  • MP: 40
  • DEF: 3
  • EXP: 4749
  • GP: 1464
  • Weakness: None
  • Weapon Orb: Glove
  • Recommended Level:30+

Strategy[]

Though it may look tough, the steel-clad Mantis Ant isn't anything of the sort; it just has more attacks than its predecessor. Gem Missile gets a major boost to Level 6, and then there's Lunar Boost to bolster its physical attack. Popoi should blast spells at it while Primm lays down the buffs and debuffs, healing as needed. Randi, meanwhile, should charge his weapon and whack it when he has the opportunity. The beast should fall within a few minutes if this is done correctly. For an easy win, stock Faerie Walnuts and have Popoi sling spells rapid-fire, refueling when needed. Metal Mantis has no specific vulnerabilities, but Salamando at level 4 or better may speed things along.
