The Hydra is a boss enemy in Final Fantasy Adventure as well as its remakes. This two-headed dragon lives deep within the Marsh Cellar, where it holds the Moon Mirror.

Story

Original

With Fuji abducted, Sumo must find a way past the butler in Kett Manor if he is to rescue her. A guest suggests that he visit the master's peat cellar for a mirror said to reveal the truth. Sumo defeats a pack of lizardmen guarding the silver key to the cellar. As he descends, Sumo finds a mysterious traveler who has already heard of his plight and agrees to help retrieve the mirror. The pair also finds a sickle to slice through the vegetation growing in the depths. Eventually, they make for an exterior wall that leads to a bog in which the hydra dwells. Though the battle is long, the duo defeats the beast and claims the mirror along with the Book of Fire.

Strategy

This is a complicated fight even as it is still quite early, for two reasons: first, the beast either spits a barrage of homing fireballs at Sumo or lunges at him; second, the battle takes place in a very tight space. If Sumo moves too far to the left, he will have to start over from the beginning. The player should not rely solely on the traveler's fireballs; though helpful when they hit, they do not have homing capability. Instead, the player should equip the sickle and smack the Hydra when it closes in, or dodge fireballs when it moves out. After a time, the Hydra will fall.
