Experience points or EXP are collected toward gaining levels for character advancement.
Legend of Mana[]
EXP is represented by small and large crystals that are dropped by defeated enemies and must be collected by walking through them, allowing level-ups to happen in real time, though the crystals will eventually blink out and be lost if not collected. Small crystals provide the base value of EXP for the defeated enemy, while large crystals have an x10 multiplier. The base value depends on game advancement (such as Mana values for the Land) and generally speaking large crystals only come from bosses, while certain enemies might simply flood the field with small crystals. Because EXP is gained by picking it up, training a non-player unit may be difficult. For Pets, which cannot be controlled by a second player, alternative methods are available, namely equipment with the EXP Share ability and Grazing at the Monster Corral. EXP Share splits the EXP the player collects evenly between all allies while any EXP they collect themselves is retained. Grazing allots 1/8 of the value of each EXP crystal collected by the player to the Pets currently Grazing, using integer division (i.e. any EXP value less than 8 is 0; any less than 16 is 1, etc.). A third alternative in the Japanese and remastered versions is Ring Ring Land, accessible via the Monster Barn and a Sony PocketStation™ for the original Japanese version or a standalone experience for the remastered release. This minigame allows the Pet to engage in battles that reward up to 2 crystals mixed and matched between small (x1) and large (x10) base values multiplied by the Pet's level and the lap number of the game.
