Charlotte's Introduction is the prologue and introductory chapter of Charlotte, one of the six playable characters in the 3D version of Trials of Mana.
It is exclusive to the character, meaning that players should include Charlotte as a party member if they wish to experience this chapter, either as the main character or by playing during a Flashback Chapter.
Unlike the other five prologue stories, Charlotte's opening is assumed to take place during Chapter I, as Charlotte does not witness the invasion of Jadd Stronghold that the others become ensnared in.
Story[]
Our story begins with a dream sequence where Charlotte is playfully looking at a flower in a blooming field. Two figures, a man and a woman, watch her silently. The young girl suddenly notices them and runs towards them excitedly. However, both disappear without a word. Charlotte pleads for her mother and father to return, but they vanish in thin air, leaving the poor girl in tears. She then wakes up from her dream and decide to venture outside of the dormitories of the Temple of Light. While pacing briskly in the direction of the exit, she runs into Heath, a young priest, who is surprised to see her running through. Heath goes to the main room of the Temple to meet his Eminence the Priest of Light, who is also Charlotte's grandfather and caretaker. The young priest confides in the old man about his concerns about Charlotte. Being half-elf, she might have sensed the recent shift in mana power.
The Priest of Light takes this opportunity to point out the Mana Statue behind him, which has begun to cry. His Eminence then asks Heath to investigate the mysterious light that appeared near Astoria last night, since it might be linked with the mana shift in power. Heath agrees to the request and adds that they should erect a magical barrier near the entrance to Cascade Cavern to protect Wendel, since it seems there is trouble in Jadd Stronghold, a neighboring city. Unbeknownst to both men, Charlotte was eavesdropping their conversation behind a wall and starts to feel anxious about Health's mission.
After deciding she should go along with him, Charlotte rushes to the main gain of the Temple of Light to meet him but is stopped by two guards and not allowed to leave the premises. Frustrated by her predicament, she then goes up the second floor and meet Mik, a young altar boy and friend of Charlotte. Despite his initial reluctance to help her, she convinces him to get her out of the Temple. Mik tells Charlotte to meet him outside of the balcony on the second floor at night, and he will bring a special device to help her achieve her goal. The young half-elf agrees and takes a nap to speed up the process.
When night comes, Charlotte rushes to the balcony where Mik presents to her a Springstepper, a cute apparatus that launches someone into the air by stepping on the head. Mik adds that she should hurry and use it before any adult comes, which prompts Charlotte to jump on the device. The Springstepper sends her flying in the wrong direction, leaving the young boy in disarray. The young half-elf eventually lands on the second playable character near Cascade Cavern, who brings her to Astoria's Inn while she's still unconscious.
When Charlotte wakes up, the playable character tells her that she should stay here since it is still nighttime and leaves. Undeterred, the young girl dashes out of the village to look for Heath in Rabite Forest. There, she is attacked by a Rabite, which serves as a Battle Tutorial. After defeating the wild creature, she heads deeper into the woods. Near the lake, she finds a man in a clearing who claims that he saw a light floating on the water at night and that it might come again this night too.
Tracing her steps back to the main road, she finally encounters a distressed Heath surrounded by Beastmen. The burly beasts decide to take down the young priest since he's from Wendel and might jeopardize their invasion. Without thinking, Charlotte runs to save Heath but is no match to the hulking creatures surrounding the priest. Fortunately, Heath casts a Holy Bolt attack and manages to get rid of them. This happy moment is interrupted by the introduction of Goremand, who casts a powerful dark spell on Heath, knocking him out.
The evil jester seems pleased to see the potential of the young priest and decides to kidnap him, to the dismay of Charlotte. The shadow creature teleports with Heath, leaving the young half-elf alone in tears. Helpless and frightened, Charlotte decides to return to Astoria after hearing a loud noise nearby; back in the Temple, Mik is being punished by an adult and the Priest of Light worries about his granddaughter's disappearance.
