Chapter II is the second chapter in the 3D version of Trials of Mana, taking place as soon as the Chosen and their party set sail from Beiser. It comprises the second leg of the heroes' mission for the Mana Spirits
Story[]
Having befriended Lumina and Gnome, the Hero King now sends the party after the remaining spirits to fulfill their quest. He has led them to Palo Port for possible clues to the Windstone. However, the Chosen and their entourage find themselves squarely in the thick of an invasion and takeover of Laurent by Nevarlan forces. Hawkeye desperately tries to reason with his former compatriots, only to find them enslaved by Belladonna's machinations. Meanwhile, Riesz is meeting with her fellow Amazon Guard members to hash out a plan to break the siege.
The party pursues the leads they acquired, ascending the Heavensway to reach the southern summit. At the foot of the peak are a meadow full of somnosa flowers, which knock the party out, and a secret hideout established by survivors of the initial raid on Laurent. Amazon soldiers have managed to capture some Nevarlan grunts, but are not able to squeeze any information from them. After their recovery, the party is called in on a meeting of Laurent's top officials, who plan to seek Sylphid's aid to turn the tide of battle. To do that, the party volunteers to contact Donperi, a wizened sage who may know a way to reach Sylphid.
The Chosen is forced on a winding errand that shoots them back to Beiser and from there to catch a ship back to Jadd. With the aid of a magical Minor Mallet, the party is able to backtrack through the Rabite Forest and into the Koropokkur Woods. There, an old man sends them on a chase through the commune before finally revealing that he is the man they seek. Donperi then directs them to Gusthall, wherein Sylphid may dwell.
No sooner do the Chosen and their company reach the apex of the caverns than they are met by a mysterious black figure who is seen assailing the wind spirit. The shadow abruptly vanishes, but Harcypete is called forth and battles the heroes. It falls swiftly, releasing the djinn from its clutches.
In return for sparing his life, Sylphid and the party head back to the somnosa meadow; and from there, he blows sleep spores toward Laurent, knocking out the Nevarlan assassins and setting up for the Amazon counter-siege. The party is then able to scale the citadel, but a devilish door conjured by Belladonna bars the path to the upper spires. Bill and Ben are also sent to challenge the heroes, but are quickly defeated.
Although Belladonna still has Elliot in her grasp and Jessica under her Choker of Death, she decides to give up her siege and retreat. Their mission complete, the party discusses next steps with Laurent, and sets off once more for Palo.
Back at the port, the party can help resolve a misunderstanding between Hawkeye's close friend, Niccolo and some disgruntled locals before it comes to blows. With this done, they spot a ship at the docks offering free passage; they seek to get back to Valsena and report back to the Hero King. As soon as they board, all fades to black.
As our heroes come to, they find themselves startled by all sorts of eerie noises. Faerie can sense the presence of other spirits aboard, for this is none other than the fabled Ghost Ship. Desperate to find a way off the vessel of the damned, they make their way through the lower decks to reach the captain's cabin. Matelo, a young man fascinated by all things paranormal, meets them there, and is delighted that he is at last a ghost. However, Matelo realizes that being undead is not as glamorous as he thought it would be, and passes his predicament, a curse, on to the party leader. With one among them out, the remaining heroes race to the main deck in hopes of breaking the curse. A sinister voice echoes through the mist, and the demon Gova materializes to confront the party. Its defeat releases the fourth spirit and scion of darkness, Shade, who then agrees to undo the ghost curse.
Shade explains that he was cursed to wander the sea aboard the ghost ship, but that the Darkstone the party seeks is no longer of this world, having vanished long ago; and yet its power grows stronger and more malevolent, in turn driving hostilities throughout the world. Shade joins the party, but the ship soon vanishes in his absence, dropping the heroes off at Beuca Island. They are knocked out once more, but their rest is short-lived. The rumble of an active volcano is heard in the distance and felt all over the island. Meanwhile, a strange creature swims along the coast and leaves the party in awe.
As the earth underfoot continues to tremble, the party finds a village of shamanic tomatomen on the island's eastern fringe. They are perfectly content to leave things be, but are aware of a deity called "ruler of the seas" that might help our heroes get off the island and avoid certain doom. It is said to dwell in the Seaside Cavern far to the west.
The party immediately heads for the grotto on the western edge of Beuca, but its mouth is blocked off by a fresh rockslide. Gnome is summoned to clear the debris, allowing the party to proceed to the depths. As they rush to meet with the so-called god of the waves, Malocchio, right-hand man of Belladonna, corners them in the deepest basin as he hopes to buy time for the volcano to erupt and bury the heroes alive. His plan is foiled when the strange creature from earlier beckons the Chosen and company to climb onto his back. He then swims toward the Golden Road, narrowly escaping the eruption to drop them off on its shores.
When the Chosen and their party finally report back to Valsena, the Hero King is in complete disbelief that the normally reclusive creature, known as Vuscav, has rendered his assistance at all. The King gives the party the Ferry Flute to summon the creature at will. He also sends them on a new mission to find the remaining Mana Spirits.
Story Variations[]
Depending on which playable characters the player has chosen, the following events may or may not happen.
- If Duran and Kevin are in the party, they'll compliment each other's fighting skills and promise to have a spar one day once they et the Mana Sword while companion 3 snarks about it.
- If Riesz is in the party, she'll attempt to fight the Nevarl agents occupying Palo port, but gets stopped by companion 1.
- If Hawkeye is in the party, he'll get nervous when faced with a Nevarl agent in Palo, fearing he may be recognized. To his shock, Hawkeye finds the Nevarl forces all in some kind of hypnotic state.
- If Riesz is not in the party, she is seen in the Palo bar talking secretly with Liza, then walks out as the party watches her.
- If Riesz is in the party, Liza calls her and the others over to the bar to reveal that the remaining Amazon guards are in hiding in the Somnosa Meadow and tells her where to find them.
- If Hawkeye is in the party, he is shocked to see Niccolo under a trance and tries to wake him up, but fails.
- If Riesz isn't in the party, she will greet the heroes once they wake up in the Amazon hideout. If she is in the party, a random Amazon will greet them.
- If Angela and Charlotte are in the party, Angela will tease Charlotte about being made even smaller after using the Minor Mallet.
