The Grim Rabite
The Black Rabite, also known as Grim Rabite is a black or dark-furred Rabite occasionally encountered in the Mana series. It is typically a paragon of the Rabite species as a whole and acts as a megaboss in Trials of Mana and a special upgrade monster in Sword of Mana. It is hard to find or unlock, and has powers well beyond those of a normal Rabite.

Trials of Mana[]
ToM (2D)
Only approachable in the Duran/Angela storyline, the Black Rabite is an incredibly powerful monster, capable of high-level magic spells, summoning Level 99 demons to assist it, and absorbing Darkness-based attacks. It is popularly considered to be the most powerful adversary in the game, and arguably in the Mana series as a whole.
When battling against the Black Rabite, "The Sacrifice - Part Two" will play. This battle theme is shared with the three final bosses (and plays for the first half of each battle against one of them).
No official art exists of the Black Rabite.
Trials of Mana Remake[]
The remake alters the Black Rabite battle significantly, as it is now accessible with any character. Once a player has beaten the last story dungeon in Trials of Mana, they must then proceed to area that they visited just before. This will vary based on the main character that the player chose:
- Angela / Duran must visit Crystal Desert.
- Charlotte / Kevin must visit Mirage Palace.
- Hawkeye / Riesz must visit Night Cavern.
Defeating the Black Rabite rewards the player with the Obsidian Power Chain Abiltity, which reduces the MP cost of any ability to 0. He can be re-challenged multiple times after that, but won't give any additional rewards, except for the rare drop of the Moogle Pin.
Sword of Mana[]
The Black Rabites encountered here are considerably less powerful than the one in Trials of Mana, but they are still far more powerful than their normal counterparts. They are unlocked by defeating 999 Rabites. The "defeat 999" process produces Black/paragon upgrades of all non-boss monsters, not just Rabites.
Dawn of Mana[]
The Black Rabite is known as the Grim Rabite. It is the corrupted grimslie form of Rabites, found as a common enemy from Chapter 5 on.
In Chapter 8, Buju takes on the shape of a docile Black Rabite.
Heroes of Mana[]
The Black Rabite is a hidden boss in a bonus mission, but unlocking him is almost as hard as beating him. He appears in a stage that is only unlocked after beating the game on hard mode, and even then he will not appear until you have sent 999 regular rabites to their deaths throughout the game.
