Anise, referred to as Anise the Witch, is a important character and optional boss exclusive to the 3D remake of Trials of Mana. She is the primeval creator and supreme sovereign of Mavolia, who resurfaces due to the almost total depletion of Mana power keeping her at bay, and immediately attempts to destroy the world of Fa'Diel, only to be destroyed by the heroes.

Story[]

Anise is seen emerging from the darkness of Mavolia, wondering where she is and immediately sensing the world around. She immediately restores her dominion over Mavolia from her Dark Realm and opens a portal between Mavolia and Fa'Diel, intending to unleash Mavolia's demonic energies over the world to obliterate it.

Warned by the Faerie, the heroes go to the Royal Library of Valsena and find a grimoire, bewitched to house the spirit of the late Great Archmage from eons ago, Grand Croix. The archmage tells them about Anise's threat. Anise immediately senses it and taunts them from afar. Amused by the prospect of heroes confronting her, she accepts to delay her apocalypse to give them time to enter her realm and destroy them.

Riding Flammie, the heroes enter Mavolia, which was reshaped by Anise into a twisted, corrupted caricature of their hometown. There, they reach and destroy the evil Goddess, saving the world. But there is no time to celebrate, for the Tree of Mana is still threatened by the main villain of the game.

Anise (Trials Remake)

Each hero much reach the fabled Fourth Class to better stand a chance against Anise. For this, they must return to their country and speak to its ruler, to pass a trial proving their worth against a formidable foe, to gain their respective Sacred Sphere, earning the Fourth Class.

Battle[]

The battle against Anise is divided in two stages: First against her normal form, then against her even mightier demonic, serpentine form.

Anise's first form conjures four Elemental Crystals that generate a barrier around her. They are all of level 73 and must be destroyed in order to attack the Demon Queen. As for Anise, she teleports often and can conjure a double of herself as support.

Dragon Anise (Concept Art)

Her second form, Dragon Anise, is too huge to fully fit onscreen. She is very fast, and often exists the arena to attack from afar or lunge at the heroes. Her attacks are very powerful and cause status effects, and merely touching her causes shrinks the heroes, so curing often is advised.

Dragon Anise can only be struck when she is on the arena, but the heroes must react quickly. Her head is the most vulnerable target, but also the hardest to reach. When she conjures Dark Crystals, the heroes must destroy them all before she can unleash her mightiest attack, Scarlet Dust. Destroying them all knocks her out and leaves her very vulnerable to attacks.
