Story[]
Altena, the Kingdom of Magicians, was located in the deepest part of a perpetually frozen arctic field, but the True Queen's magic kept the cold away, maintaining a balmy spring temperature all over the kingdom. However, as the Mana of the world grew weaker, so did her power, and the cold slowly but surely crept inside the castle walls. Advised by her second-in-command, the Crimson Wizard, she held an important meeting with their best soldiers to discuss their plan to invade other kingdoms and activate the Mana Stones scattered throughout the land. Doing so would open the portal to the Sanctuary of Mana, where the Queen would find the Mana Sword, giving her tremendous magical powers and letting her rule the world with her magic.
Meanwhile, Angela the young princess and daughter of the True Queen is studying magic with her personal tutor José. Visibly impatient, Angela tries to hurry up the lesson to try out new spells, which annoys the old mentor. Angela ultimately fails to effectively cast magic again, and José comments on her relying on form instead of spirit. Irritated by the feedback, the young princess gives her tutor the Akanbe and storms off. Upon reaching the inner rampart outside, she sees her friend Victor and waves at him. Victor comments that José is always complaining when her Highness skips lessons and that she should consider his plight.
Angela grew up fatherless and lingered in the shadows of her mother's duties. As a result, she grew hungry for attention and started making pranks, which furthered the decisions of her elders to punish her for her antics. The young girl grew up frustrated and lonely even though she possessed the same beauty as her mother. The fact that she couldn't use magic in her late teens didn't help with gathering suspicion and contempt. In desperate need to find something fun to do, Angela wandered the castle and learned about her mother's plan to invade Valsena, a neighboring kingdom.
She is then informed by Victor that Her Majesty has summoned her and that she should hurry to the throne room. Victor adds that the True Queen and the Crimson Wizard are planning to invade Valsena. When Angela enters the throne room and kneeling in front of her mother, the Crimson Wizard explains that Altena must control the Mana Stones to access the Sanctuary of Mana and seize the Sword of Mana for themselves. However, they must cast a powerful but forbidden magic that takes the life of the enchanter in exchange for enough mana energy to open the portal in the first place. The True Queen adds that they intend to sacrifice Angela and use her body as a vessel for that cursed magic in order to release the Mana Stones' true power. She comments that her daughter's lack of magic has been a useless blight on her lineage and that the sacrifice should suffice to make up for her deficiency.
Visibly shaken by her mother's comment, Angela screams and accidentally lets out a magical light that teleports her outside the castle walls, leaving her mother and the Crimson Wizard in shock. Slowly regaining consciousness, Angela finds herself in front of the closed castle gates, shivering in the cold. Nowhere to go but forward, she decides to search for a village to the east in hopes of asking for shelter. Before she arrives, she encounters a Sahagin that she's forced to fight with for her Battle Tutorial.
After defeating it, she wanders around the frozen plains until she collapses with early signs of hypothermia. Angela wakes up a while later in a warm, cozy bed; she was rescued by a young girl named Chirry and her mother. Excited to see that the young woman is up and about, the little girl asks her mother if she could play with her. While her elder disapproves the remark, she adds that she will play with her instead, leaving Angela to explore the town. While searching for clues to know what to do next, Angela is horrified to see wanted posters of her on the local billboard from the Altenish kingdom, informing her that she is wanted for treason.
Disheartened by this, she heads for the inn and meets an old Fortune-teller telling her to seek the guidance of the Priest of Light in Wendel. A bystander makes a snide comment that the old hag told him the same thing when he asked for his future baby's gender. Nonetheless, this advice gives Angela a small hint of hope and pushes her to take the next ferry to Jadd Stronghold to escape her kingdom and possibly learn magic on the way.
